Gollum Lives! Well, Lived, Anyway | Manolith

panama_monster_450x338In Panama, a group of local teenagers were reportedly terrified when a hairless, slimy creature appeared from behind a nearby waterfall at Cerro Azul and approached them. Thinking that it was going to attack them, the teens pelted it with rocks, which killed the creature. Then they tossed it in the lake and fled the scene.

Later, the body washed up on the shore and was picked apart by buzzards. Local authorities speculate that it might be some sort of mutated sloth.

High Strangeness In Ocean County (or just in the head of the author…granted)

No. I haven’t done much writing in the past. So why I’m trying to do so now is, I guess, an attempt to challenge old habits. As well as, the threat of being terminally unemployed. I hope it’s not too terrible. That does not necessarily mean that this is an exercise in fiction. I’m gonna go through the motions, step by step, of what seems to be an actual event that took place with my son and I.

With that out of the way, let’s proceed with blog post #2.

You know, I could of sworn I wrote it down somewhere. At the time, it seemed like such a big deal. My son and I stared at it for about 10 minutes, one evening, on the hill of the Lillian M. Dunfee elementary school in Barnegat, NJ. To my memory, it was March 2006, about 7:30 to 8:00 pm. Yes, there were other people there, but they seemed uneffected. What were we looking at? Lights in the sky. About the size of a coin (a silver dollar seems accurate), that fazed in and out of…..existence. ?? No, I can’t say what it was, but I can say what it was not.

There was a couple of things that convinced me they were not planes, flares, or helicopters. For one, they stayed stationary, only changing their opacity. Then each fading into view on one part of the sky, disappearing, and fading back in another part, a couple meters away. It did this in some child-like, playful way. I don’t remember any color change, just bright white. Another thing, was how I found them. I was coming back from the Barnegat library into Settlers Landing, from Gunning River Rd. and just…pulled over. Like a total brain-fart. As if I suddenly forgot how to drive the car. (I’m aware how artificial that sounds). Well I looked up and saw them. I took my son out of the car & we walked onto the hill and stood staring like we were watching a concert. My son seemed to find this behavior totally acceptable. He was just like “Cool, Dad.” I remember feeling stunned, but had no particular reason to feel that way. After all, they were just stupid lights in the sky. “whoohoo.”

I could say “whoohoo” all I wanted in the mirror, but I subconsciously couldn’t shake it. It lingered. My first instinct was, of course, “keep this shit to yourself”. But why? It happened. My son was there too. (Ugh, I’m not sure why but, I feel kind of nauseous as I write this.)

As you probably predicted, I started to obsess over UFO crap for a while. I Googled, rented all the alien movies, read books, and YES, I got really into Star Trek. There I am, a father in his late 30’s regressing to a nerdy, 13 year old kid. I knew all of this going into it, but it permeated my consciousness. Nevertheless, I did a good job keeping it under wraps.

Over the years, I would drop it, and come back to it again. But as we all know, the internet is a great place to find other eccentrics and fringe enthusiasts.  About a week ago I did a search through Google for: barnegat, ufos, reports — and found this:

Anyone with an experience of their own or a mild curiosity about this subject would benefit from watching the documentary “Out Of The Blue” (on YouTube).

There are a myriad of UFO documentaries and I saved you the trouble of suffering through them. Most are just predators, cults (Hello L. Ron Hubbard) and pep rallies for ufo entertainment, with no real answers.

If you are a listener of podcasting, I would also recommend on called “The Paracast.”
